I attended Medical School at the University of Lund, Sweden and graduated in 1980. My first clinical position was as a trainee at the Department of Pediatrics in Lund. After my basic clinical training I started my training in Pediatric Cardiology in Lund combined with clinical research resulting in my thesis, “Evaluation of cardiac function and chamber size in children using Doppler and cross-sectional echocardiography” which I defended in 1991.
Soon after my dissertation, the centralization of Swedish Pediatric Cardiac Surgery to 2 hospitals (Lund and Gothenburg) took place. Our referral area and thus, the number of referred patients to our hospital doubled over one night. It was the start of a new era in Sweden and I felt priviliged to be in the middle of it.
My major area of clinical and scientific interest is preoperative investigation and preparation, especially echocardiography, perioperative care and long term results, ie mortality, morbidity and neurodevelopmental follow-up. Working at a complete pediatric cardiac center continues to be fascinating and challenging and very rewarding.
I have had the honour and joy to be involved in AEPC, ie in the council of AEPC, first as Secretary General and recently as the President. Getting to know and workinf with friends and colleagues from all over the world has been a very important part of my professional life.
I´m currently chair of the Swedish patient organization for children and adolescents with congenital or acquired heart disease
I´ve been the leader of the pediatric cardiology team in Lund during two different time intervals, the latest started 2013 and is ongoing. With increasing age I find leadership and development of the team a more and more fascinating challenge and my interest in the science of leadership in highly specialized situations have increased over the years.
